Man, 61, charged with attempted murder in Somerset County stabbing

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ (Somerset County) – A Middlesex County man has been charged with attempted murder in a Somerset County stabbing Sunday night, according to Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald.

On March 24, at around 8:03 p.m., Franklin Township police were notified by security personnel from an area trauma hospital with concerns for a victim who sustained an alleged stab wound in Franklin Township. The victim, a New Brunswick resident, sustained potential life-threatening injuries and underwent emergency surgery at the hospital, McDonald said.

Following surgery, the victim was subsequently interviewed by detectives from the Franklin Township Police Department and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit. The investigation revealed that the victim was stabbed during a verbal altercation that occurred in the vicinity of Hamilton Street in Franklin Township on the evening of Sunday, March 24, McDonald said.

As a result of this investigation, detectives were able to identify Thomas E. Carter, 61, of Highland Park as the individual allegedly responsible for the alleged stabbing, McDonald said.

On Tuesday, March 26, detectives were able to track and locate Carter in Highland Park where he was arrested without incident and charged with first-degree attempted murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. He was then lodged in the Somerset County Jail pending a detention, McDonald said.
